The Carriage of DIRECT REDUCED IRON (D)
The 2023 edition of the International Maritime Solid Bulk Cargoes Code (IMSBC Code) is now in force and introduced a new schedule for Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) type D.

The IMSBC Code schedule for DRI (D) sets the principal hazard as hydrogen gas generation with secondary hazards of self-heating and liquefaction. To keep hydrogen concentration within the holds below a designated limit the new schedule sets out a regime of controlled mechanical surface ventilation and regular gas concentration measurements for safe carriage.
The new schedule and appendix for DRI (D) runs to 10 pages and contains a lot of detail and advice. Given this, the International Group of P&I Clubs together with Dr J H Burgoyne & Partners LLP and INTERCARGO have produced a Circular which summarises the main points of the DRI (D) schedule. Further guidance and explanatory notes are also given.
The Circular is for guidance only and the relevant entries from the IMSBC Code remain the primary source of carriage requirements which should be relied upon.
